ʿAqīdah

Islamic theology and creed according to the Ḥanbalī-Atharī understanding: what a Muslim is required to believe, grounded in narration rather than speculative theology.

What ʿAqīdah is العقيدة

ʿAqīdah is the science of what a Muslim is required to believe concerning Allāh, His Names and Attributes, the unseen realities, and the obligations of faith.

The word ʿaqīdah derives from the root ʿ-q-d, meaning to bind or tie firmly. It refers to what one’s heart is bound to in certainty: the foundations of faith that every Muslim holds without doubt. In its technical sense, it is the science that establishes, through transmitted evidence, what is obligatory, possible and impossible to believe regarding Allāh, His Messengers, the angels, the revealed scriptures, the Last Day, and the divine decree.

Muslim theology has more than one school, each with its own method. The Ḥanbalī-Atharī position holds to what the text says, and to what the early generations understood it to mean. It does not resort to the interpretive re-readings (taʾwīl) that other schools employ, and it does not attribute modality or likeness to Allāh’s Attributes. Imām Ibn Qudāmah expressed this in Lumʿah al-Iʿtiqād: Allāh is described with what He has attributed to Himself in His Book and upon the tongue of His Prophet, neither adding to that nor subtracting from it.

The Atharī ʿAqīdah is not synonymous with the contemporary Salafī position, as is sometimes assumed. The Ḥanbalī-Atharī creed has its own textual canon, its own chain of scholars, and its own settled positions, several of which differ from what is presented in modern Salafī literature under the same name. Here, the Atharī ʿAqīdah is taught as it was transmitted through the Ḥanbalī scholarly chain, from Ibn Qudāmah through the later Ḥanbalī imāms to Shaykh Yūsuf b. Ṣādiq al-Ḥanbalī, who holds a connected chain to this text.

How ʿAqīdah is studied here

The path begins with Lumʿah al-Iʿtiqād, returns to it in depth through the Ḥāshiyah al-Muwaffaq, and then moves to the settled positions of the later school.

١
Foundational

Lumʿah al-Iʿtiqād

By Imām Ibn Qudāmah al-Maqdisī (d. 620H). Direct and free of complex theological terminology, it is the entry point for every student of Ḥanbalī-Atharī creed.

٢
Commentary

Ḥāshiyah al-Muwaffaq

Shaykh Yūsuf b. Ṣādiq's commentary on the Lumʿah, written from within the Ḥanbalī-Atharī perspective. It takes the same text again in depth, so that what was learned at the first step is understood and not only known.

٣
Intermediate

Qalāʾid al-ʿIqyān

By Ibn Balbān (d. 1083H), a summary of Nihāyat al-Mubtadiʾīn by Ibn Ḥamdān. Alongside it a student reads four shorter works of Ibn Qudāmah: Dhamm al-Taʾwīl, Taḥrīm al-Naẓar, al-Ṣirāṭ al-Mustaqīm and Ithbāt Ṣifat al-ʿUluww.

Reading in ʿAqīdah

Published from the taught material of this science.

Shaykh Yūsuf b. Ṣādiq al-Ḥanbalī

Trained at al-Azhar al-Sharīf under Shaykh Dr. Muḥammad Sayyid al-Ḥanbalī, the Grand Shaykh of the Ḥanābilah at al-Azhar, under whom he studied Lumʿah al-Iʿtiqād and Qalāʾid al-Iqyān among many other texts. He holds general ijāzahs in the Ḥanbalī Madhhab from qualified chains, including from Shaykh Dr. Walīd al-Manīsī al-Ḥanbalī. His chain in Lumʿah al-Iʿtiqād connects through an uninterrupted Ḥanbalī line back to Ibn Qudāmah al-Maqdisī himself.

Common questions

ʿAqīdah is the science of Islamic creed: what a Muslim is required to believe concerning Allāh, His Attributes, the Messengers, the unseen, and the Last Day. The Ḥanbalī-Atharī position holds that what is believed must be what was transmitted from the early scholars of Ahl al-Ḥadīth, received through a qualified teacher. A creed studied without a connected teacher risks drifting, often without the student realising it.

No. The Ḥanbalī-Atharī creed has its own textual canon, its own chain of scholars, and its own settled positions. Several of these differ from what is presented in contemporary Salafī literature under the same name. Here, the Atharī ʿAqīdah is taught through the classical Ḥanbalī texts as they were understood and transmitted within the school.

No prior formal study is required for the foundational course. Lumʿah al-Iʿtiqād was written to be accessible: direct and free of complex theological terminology. What is required is seriousness of intention and a willingness to receive the knowledge through a teacher and with the relevant texts.

The connected chain is how knowledge is confirmed to have passed, teacher to student, through qualified hands. When a teacher holds an ijāzah in a text, someone qualified to grant it judged him competent to transmit it; that teacher had the same judgment made of him, and so on back to the source. This is how the Ḥanbalī school safeguards its knowledge.
