Uṣūl al-Tafsīr
The method behind reading the Qurʾān: what a sound interpretation rests on, how the Book explains itself and is explained by the Sunnah, and what protects a reader from imposing his own meaning on revelation.
What Uṣūl al-Tafsīr is أصول التفسير
Tafsīr is the explanation of the Qurʾān. Uṣūl al-Tafsīr is the science of the principles that govern that explanation: not the meaning of a given verse, but the rules by which any verse is soundly understood.
It answers questions that stand before interpretation itself. What are the valid sources of tafsīr, and in what order do they carry weight: the Qurʾān explaining itself, then the Sunnah, then the understanding of the Companions and the early generations? What is the place of language in reading a verse, and where does trained judgment end and unfounded opinion begin? How are the occasions of revelation, the abrogating and abrogated, and the general and specific to be weighed? These principles are what separate a reading grounded in the tradition from one imposed upon it.

Tafsīr is the explanation of the Qurʾān, verse by verse. The Qurʾān can and should be read by every Muslim. But explaining it as a science, and teaching that explanation to others, is a different undertaking. Without settled principles, a reader is exposed to his own understanding, which may be sound or a sophisticated error. Uṣūl al-Tafsīr is what anchors interpretation to what the tradition received.
